Professor Huang Qiang Honored Award of Merit by IFToMM

From 30 June to 5 July 2019, the 15th IFToMM World Congress organized by the International Federation for the Promotion of Mechanism and Machine Science (IFToMM) was held in Poland’s historical city Krakow. At the conference, Professor Huang Qiang of Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT) received the Award of Merit from IFToMM. As was highlighted in the award presentation speech, Professor Huang Qiang’s “outstanding contribution to the mechanism design, motion planning, balance control and system integration of humanoid and space robots has had significant influence on robotics and greatly promoted the advancement of technologies of this field."

  

  

  

  

IFToMM was founded half a century ago in Poland. The Award of Merit recognizes extraordinary contribution to the field of mechanism and machine science. Professor Huang was the only winner of this year’s award, which makes him the 13th recipient of this global recognition.

  

As an important global academic organization in mechanism and machine science, IFToMM’s member organizations spread across 50 countries and regions, covering the most technologically advanced geographies. It has 13 Technical Committees dedicated to various areas including computational kinematics, gearing and transmission, robotics, human-machine interfaces, linkages and cams, mechatronics, micro machines, non-linear vibration reliability, transportation, multi-body dynamics and tribology.      

  

Biography:

  

Huang Qiang, born in July 1965, is professor of BIT, IEEE Fellow, Changjiang Distinguished Professor, recipient of the National Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars and one of the first leading technological innovation talents under the “Ten Thousand Talents Program”. He also serves as the director of BIT’s Intelligent Robot Institute, executive director of BAICIRS and director of Key Laboratory of Biomimetic Robots and Systems under Ministry of Education (MOE). Professor Huang is also a member of the Standing Committee of the Beijing Municipal Committee of the Chinese Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC).

  

He is the associate editor of several international journals including Advanced Robotics, International Journal of Social Robotics, Neuroscience and Biomedical Engineering and Unmanned System, and co-founder of IEEE Technical Committee on Cyborg and Bionic Systems (CBS) and IEEE International Conference on CBS. In recent years, he has chaired several global conferences including IEEE Humanoids 2018, IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Biomimetics (ROBIO 2017), IEEE CBS 2017 and the 2017 International Conference on Complex Medical Engineering (ICME 2017). Apart from chairing the Organization Committee of 2006 International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS 2006), he co-chaired the Program Committees and chaired the Award Committees for over 30 times in multiple international academic summits including IEEE IROS 2006, IEEE International Conference on Mechatronics and Automation (ICMA),  IEEE ROBIO, and IEEE International Conference on Information and Automation (ICIA).

 

Over the years of devoted work on the research and development of humanoid robot, micro-nano robotic manipulation and intelligent prosthetics, Professor Huang developed the 6th generation “BHR” (BIT Humanoid Robot, also dubbed “ Huitong ”), published over 100 SCI papers and was authorized with more than 70 invention patents. He also won the 2nd Prize for State Technological Invention Award as the first accomplisher and received over ten international academic honors.
